You can easily connect live video from Facebook to Altar. Note that at the moment, Facebook Live adds around 15 seconds to every broadcast, regardless of streaming software. We recommend using YouTube or Vimeo if you'd like to avoid the delay.

If you'd like to upload a prerecorded video, we recommend doing so via YouTube. Using YouTube for prerecorded videos allows them to be fully synched in Altar meaning all members will view the video at the same pace.

If you do not have a preference for synched video, you can upload your prerecorded video from Facebook.

Troubleshooting Facebook Stream Errors

Facebook uses algorithms to detect copyright material. However, the algorithm is known to mistakenly block videos from being embedded and can be unpredictable and hard to resolve. For this reason, we recommend using YouTube for all your streaming.

Check to see if the video audience is set to Public. Facebook only allows Public videos to be shared to a third-party platform.

Connect a Live Facebook Feed

You can connect an ongoing live event or a scheduled event to an Altar Live event.

Step 1: Go to Facebook.

Step 2: Click on "Live video"

Step 3: Select "Go Live"

Step 4: Set up your Live Stream. Be sure to select Share on your timeline and change the permissions to Public, so you could share the link with others

Step 5: Once your stream is set up click on Go Live

Step 6: Go to your profile from another tab and find this event on Facebook the timeline.

Step 7: Click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the event card and click copy link.  Don't copy the URL of the video above the video preview, otherwise, you'll be copying the post of the video rather than just the video feed.

Step 8: Open the Altar Live application.

Step 9: Create an event in Altar Live.

Step 10: On the Stream step, select the Facebook option. Paste the URL copied from Facebook to the URL field

Step 11: To start the event on Altar, all you need to do is to click Go Live on the upper panel of the event.

Connecting Altar Live to a Scheduled Facebook Live Event

Step 1: On your Facebook page, press “Go Live” and select “Create Event”

Step 2: Fill out the event details/preferences, and press “Create Event”.  Be sure the event permissions are set to Public.

Step 3: On the event confirmation screen, select “Set up live video”

Step 4: From the Livestream Setup screen, go to the “Dashboard”, scroll to the section labeled “Preview Link”, and select “View Post”.

Note: If you’re not ready to start this step yet, you can always return to it by viewing your upcoming events and selecting “Set up live video”.

Step 5: A new tab will open with a preview of your live stream. From here, press the three dots and select “Copy Link” from the dropdown tab.

Step 6: Create a new event in Altar Live.  On the Stream step, select Facebook Live as the stream source and paste the URL.

Note: Because the stream is not currently active, no video will appear in the preview window.

Step 7:  At the scheduled time, go live on Facebook!  If you go live on Facebook after your Altar Live event start time, audience members will see a “Video Unavailable” screen until they refresh the page.  You may want to go live on Facebook a couple of minutes before your Altar start time to avoid this.
